Together with our project partners, we explore machine learning and computer vision as tools for automatically generating surgery reports. The 'KIARA’ system captures footage of the surgical site using cameras integrated into the OR lights. The image data from these cameras is then analyzed using artificial intelligence to detect objects, surgical staff, and processes throughout the procedure. This allows the system to automatically generate a draft surgical report, which can then be reviewed, adapted and finalized by medical staff. Looking beyond the current use case of surgery reports, we also see the results of KIARA as a foundation for making the OR more understandable for future software and robotics applications.
